Day 24 - Innkeepers
Innkeepers - a prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
as we celebrate the miracle
of Your coming into this world,
we recognise that Your coming then, as now,
depends upon the willingness of others
to make room for You:
Mary, with her trembling ‘Yes’,
believing and conceiving
the Christ child;
Joseph with angelic reassurance,
taking Mary home as his wife
and agreeing to be earthly father to the Son of God;
An unnamed host in Bethlehem,
opening heart and home,
setting aside convenience for compassion’s sake,
Teach us the gift of welcome,
of indiscriminate kindness,
so that we may show mercy to those who need our invitation and show grace in our generous hospitality.
We have freely received Your grace,
we have been adopted into Your family,
we have been invited to Your table.
So,
when You stand knocking,
when You call our name,
may we, for our part, throw wide the door
insisting
that today,
we entertain not only angels
but the Son of God,
who comes to us as
friend or stranger,
naked or needy,
foreigner or ‘other’.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
