The Advent Calendar is over

Day 11 - Elizabeth
Elizabeth – a reflection

Elizabeth

A Judean hilltown, 2000 years ago.
Elizabeth.
Living in hope.
Was and still is, part of the wonder of Advent.
Years of yearning, longing, and knowing.
Knowing God’s love.
Years of trusting, enduring, somehow perceiving God’s timing is God’s timing.

Overcome with the wonder of being pregnant, a faded dream becomes an amazing reality.
Thankfulness and joy banish forever the emptiness that once filled her soul: ‘This is what the Lord has done for me when he looked favourably on me and took away the disgrace I have endured among my people.’
Elizabeth and Zachariah’s faithful, steadfast honouring of God has become a sacred gift of gladness.

A gift for all generations.

2000 years later.
Elizabeth.
Her smile lights up a room.
Her courage and hope in God is humbling.
She lives, sharing God’s love.
Life-limiting, they call her condition, but her trust in God is life-inspiring!
Living in the glorious freedom of God’s care,
grace whispers to us all the wonder of the love of God our Father.

A young couple
hopes dashed,
bereft.
A promise of new things to be is broken.
Yet,
a glimmer of Love shines and beckons,
God’s outstretched hand invites us to journey onwards.

As we journey through Advent,
may we see the light of courage and faith in our companions.
Where we see trust and obedience,
may we be reminded of Elizabeths, full of integrity and faith.
As we see those who live in faith, hope and love,
may our own eyes and our hearts be opened to receive the wonder of Advent.
